Valentines Day

Valentines Day comes from Saint Valentine who was martyred during Roman times for secretly performing Christian marriages. His death coincided with the Roman festival of Lupercalia when young men and women were selected to become couples at random, so Saint Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. His Saint's day is celebrated with gifts of flowers and chocolates on 14th February and is a great occasion to show the people you love how much you care.

Perfection Chocolates brings out a range of gift ideas every year to celebrate this special day, including chocolate hearts and cupids as well heart shaped gift boxes. We also stock our full range of chocolates with which to tempt your loved ones.

Easter

The symbol of the Easter bunny has some very ancient origins. Saxon and Germanic tribes worshipped the Goddess Eastre, through her earthly symbol, the rabbit or hare who they belived could lay eggs. Eastre's hare represented fertility, new life, and rebirth.

This pagan fesitval was later taken on by Christian culture to represent new life and the emergence of Christ from his sealed tomb or shell at the Christian festival of Easter. This is also similar to the popular ideas of spring and the use of baby chickens and lambs at Easter since they all represent new birth and new life. For Christians, the lamb also represents the Lamb of God and is a symbol of the resurrection.

The bunny though became popular in Easter card designs in the 19th century. The idea of Easter eggs goes back to the time of ancient Persia and Egypt and was also a part of the culture of the Germanic tribes of Europe. The egg was easily taken over by Christian culture to symbolize new life. Just as a Chick breaks out of its shell, so too, Jesus emerged from His tomb.

For many cultures, the egg is a symbol of life and fertility. References to its use in spring festivals can be found in Pagan, Greek, Persian, and Chinese writings. The early Christians Adopted it, as a symbol of the resurrection of Christ and it became part of the Easter celebration. Eventually, these customs evolved and people began to offer chocolate eggs instead. Other traditions emerged, such as hiding colored and decorated eggs and organizing Easter egg hunts.

Mothers Day

mothersday chocolatesMother's Day falls on various days of the year in different countries because it has a number of different origins. One school of thought claims this day emerged from a custom of mother worship in ancient Greece. Mother worship - which kept a festival to Cybele, a great mother of gods, and Rhea, the wife of Cronus - was held on March 15 to March 18 around Asia Minor. They insist that this custom spread around the world from there.

Fathers Day

fathers dayFather's Day is a holiday to celebrate fatherhood and parenting by males, just as Mother's Day celebrates motherhood. Typically giving gifts to fathers and celebrating as a family is the main event of the day. Father's Day is celebrated at differing times through the year, as seen below.

Father's Day exists almost all over the world to honor and commemorate fathers or forefathers. In the Roman Catholic tradition, Father's Day is celebrated on Saint Joseph's Day, though in most countries Father's Day is a secular celebration.
